Springfield Diocesan Cemeteries has served the Catholic faithful of western Massachusetts for generations. We care for 12 diocesan cemeteries across the region — sacred spaces where families can find comfort, community, and the enduring promise of the resurrection.

Catholic Funeral Rights
The Catholic funeral rite is one of the Church’s most sacred ceremonies — a final commendation of the faithful departed to God’s mercy, and a source of consolation for those who grieve.
Rooted in centuries of tradition, the rite typically includes the Vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal at the graveside. Each step is an act of worship, an affirmation of faith in the resurrection, and a reminder that death is not the final word.
Cremation
The Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is not chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine. However, the Church is clear: cremated remains must be treated with the same reverence as the body, and must be buried or entombed in a sacred place.
Scattering ashes, dividing remains, or keeping them at home are not consistent with Catholic teaching. A Catholic cemetery provides the sacred space the Church requires — and the dignity your loved one deserves.

Springfield Diocesan Cemeteries offers a range of burial options to meet the needs and wishes of every family. Whether you are planning ahead or making arrangements during a time of loss, we will walk you through every option with care and without pressure.
Our cemeteries offer traditional in-ground burial, mausoleum entombment, cremation gardens, columbarium niches, and sections for both monuments and flat markers.
